Publishing profile

The history of the publishing work of the Francke Foundations in Halle dates back to the founding of the institutions. In continuation of this tradition founded in the late 17th century, the publications of the Foundations today appear under the name Publisher of the Francke Foundations. The publishing house offers its readers a broad spectrum of publications on the Francke Foundations and their history. From general information, exhibition catalogues and illustrated books to research literature, the wide range of activities of the Francke Foundations is also reflected in the publishing series.

A major focus is on scientific publications. In cooperation with our commission partner, Wiesbadener Harrassowitz Verlag, four research series are published.

  • The »Halleschen Forschungen« publishes scientific papers on Pietism, the Francke Foundations and their international relations as conference proceedings or monographs.
  • The catalogues of the Foundation's own extensive collections from the library, archive, Cabinet of Artefacts and Natural Curiosities are published in the»Halleschen Quellenpublikationen und Repertorien«.
  •  Against the backdrop of the Francke Foundations' international influence since the early 18th century, two geographical focal points of the publishing work have emerged: The »Neuen Halleschen Berichte« widmen sich der Publikation wissenschaftlicher Quellen und Studien zur Geschichte und Gegenwart Südindiens. The »Quellen zur Geschichte Sibiriens und Alaskas aus russischen Archiven« provide material from the 18th century on the history, natural history and ethnology of this region.
  • The »Kleine Quellentexte« and »Kleine Schriftenreihe« series publish and explain manageable sources.

A further focus are the richly illustrated catalogues on the changing exhibitions of the Francke Foundations, which are a central component of their cultural programme. The »Catalogues of the Francke Foundations« always offer supplementary and in-depth insights into the exhibition themes and can therefore continue to have an effect even after the end of an exhibition.
