Heinrich Melchior Mühlenberg (1711-1787). Patriarch of the Lutheran Church in North America

Mobile Exhibition with Roll-ups

The panels of the mobile exhibition can be seen in a church in the USA.

2011 marked the 300th anniversary of the birthday of the Protestant theologian Heinrich Melchior Mühlenberg (1711-1787), the founder of the Lutheran Church in the USA on both sides of the Atlantic, who is highly respected and whose sons are among the founding fathers of American democracy.

In 1742 the second director of the Francke Foundations, Gotthilf August Francke (1696-1769), had sent the pietistically influenced theologian Mühlenberg to the colony of Pennsylvania for the spiritual care of the German immigrants. Mühlenberg built up a functioning Lutheran church system from New York to Georgia and gained great respect in colonial North America up to the highest political circles. His sons John Peter Gabriel Mühlenberg and Frederick Augustus Mühlenberg are among the co-founders of American democracy. They received their education in the schools of the Francke Foundations, which were among the best of their time. In the anniversary year, the Francke Foundations developed two high-quality mobile exhibitions informing about the life and work of Heinrich Melchior Mühlenberg.
